EYE BANK TECHNICIAN JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION PURPOSE:

This part-time or full-time employee works under the supervision on the HLEB facility Branch Manager to recover eye tissue for transplant and research use from donors and perform activities that relate to the screening of donors and distribution of tissue.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Recover eye tissue from tissue donors for transplant and research purposes, including drawing blood samples for serological testing
  • Perform donor medical history reviews and physical assessments including gross evaluation of ocular tissues
  • Transport eye tissue to/from HLEB laboratories as required
  • Prepare eye tissue and biological specimens for transport
  • Interact with physicians and hospital staff in a professional manner
  • Operate and maintain company vehicles as required
  • Perform facility cleaning and equipment maintenance as required
  • Perform all job functions in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations, Eye Bank Association of American Medical Standards, and HLEB standard operating procedures
  • Accept routine on-call responsibilities outside of usual business hours including responding to pages in a timely manner and following through with tasks that may continue past scheduled shift times

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school degree or equivalent
  • Bachelor’s degree in a Life Sciences field or equivalent work experience preferred for full-time position applicants
  • Medical or funeral home background preferred
  • Clean driving record, valid driver’s license and insurance, and reliable transportation

KNOWLEDGE AND PROBLEM-SOLVING ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Effective interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to operate a facsimile machine
  • Strong working knowledge of aseptic technique, applicable state and federal regulations, Eye Bank Association of America Medical Standards, and HLEB standard operating procedures

EFFORT REQUIRED:

  • Ability to perform delicate manual procedures requiring high amounts of dexterity
  • Ability to lift and/or move over 50 pounds
  • Willingness to work outside of usual business hours including weekends and holidays, on-call shifts, and following through with tasks that may continue past scheduled shift times
